So like 2 years ago, my heat pump went out. I called a repairman. And he came out, charged me like $100 for the visit, and told me it’d be like $1000 to fix.
I have a buddy who knows a little about HVAC, came and looked at it, blew some shit up but in the end fixed it for about $400…
After that I was talking to my father in law, who told me about Choice Home Warranty. He said he’d had them for years. Wasn’t particularly happy with them, but didn’t hate them either. And suggested something like that for me. So I looked into it….
I’d always figured home warranties were a scam, but he seemed to be all about it.
So i looked at their website, read through their documents, and it seemed like a decent deal… I pay them like $70 a month and $100 if i make a claim…. how often am i gonna make a claim? I mean water heaters just dont start leaking right?
Wrong….
So tonight my wife noticed a shit-ton of water in our basement. Usually, we get water in our basement when it rains, but we haven’t had a lot of rain recently so i investigated. It was the water heater. And it was leaking pretty bad.
I turned the water off, killed the power and went to my PC, because HEY! I have a home warranty now.
I filed a claim on the Choice website. It was easy. Real easy. And they were like “Someone will contact you soon!”
I did in fact get a contact soon, real soon! And it said CONGRATS! we have a person in your area who will come look at your shit next Tuesday!
Wait…. Tuesday?
Today is Thursday…. my water heater is leaking all over my basement, and we now have no hot water on top of the flooding….
Thursday… Friday… Saturday… Sunday… Monday… Tuesday…
THAT Tuesday?
They were like, “Yep! Tuesday!”
Nah! Thats like 5 days son. Im gonna smell real bad and be real pissed off in five days without a hot shower. The guy that shows up on TUESDAY isnt going to like me for more than one reason.
So, in normal ME fashion, I bombard their website and phone and chat….
I get nothing… just a chat-bot that says “You can cancel your claim if you dont like it”….
Why would I want to cancel my claim? My basement is flooding, and I have no hot water.
I blew that shit up…. about 30 minutes later, I get a message that they’re looking for someone who can come out sooner….
Good on them, and I appreciate the fact that someone actually read all the shit I wrote… but we will see if they actually follow thru.
You know that I’ll be on their ass. Because if this shit isn’t resolved tomorrow. We’re gonna have issues…
I do find it strange that this disclaimer is on their website:

So they reached out, and said I can use my own plumber, but they needed the estimate and some pictures once he arrives. When I submit the info, theyd be on it within 10 minutes….
That right theree made me bee like, yeahhhh… but i played along…
Plumber showed up, gave me the info the requested, i uploaded it….
10 minutes later I got a phone call – HOLY SHIT! Theyre following through….
Right?
Wrong…
Dudeman on the phone says they need a more detailed accounting of the charges and more detailed pictures.
So I tell the plumber this, and hes like “Dude, thats what I got I got – the estimate, and the pics of the fucking water tank”
So I sent that actual estimate and all the pictures he had taken….
We stood around….
Like 20 minutes later, hes like “Yo, am I doing this or not?”
I needed water, so I said Do it.
He was here for about 4 hours working…..
About 3 hours after he left, I received another email from Choice “We need a better price breakdown, and better pictures”
So wait…. the plumber was supposed to be sitting around here this whole time, not working, waiting for you to say “Go for it!?!”
So my bottom line is that Choice Home Warranty is a piece of shit.
I think I will be filing in Small Claims Court against them to attempt to get maybe some of it paid for.
Will post later how that goes….
